"Unfresh"

Ironically, this last jack of the year was a little pulpy by the time I got to it. It was like a race against time. I'm pretty disappointed with my jacks this year. Nothing stands out much, though I kind of like "Duplicitous" as a spontaneous sort of piece. This last one started out as Karloff's Frankenstein, but the forehead ended up being too normal so I felt I had to make him into a zombie in order to salvage it. It could have been worse. Unfortunately, this guy, among other pumpkin sculptors I've found online, sort of leave me in the dust. I don't know how this guy cranks so many of them out.

I really have to think about not sculpting jack-o-lanterns in any great quantity anymore. Pumpkins are getting more expensive and what's the point of spending so much time on art that's not going to be around in a couple weeks? It seems like all of my pumpkins were too soft and thin-shelled this year.

I'll be happy when they develop synthetic jack-o-lantern pumpkins that are suitable for 3D sculptures like these but it seems for now no synthetic material has the particular qualities that makes real pumpkin flesh so ideal for jack-o-lanterns. I don't know that for a fact but if there were I don't know why guys like this would go on carving their amazing creations out of such a fleeting perishable medium.

  1. Hello Steve,
To begin : excuse me for my very bad use of english language... I'm french...
Congratulations for your great work ! Unfresh pumpkins, perhaps, but beautiful sculptures !... I love the bunch of monsters for Fangoria, too !...
I was looking for reviews about "Lemora", by Richard Blackburn (one of my favourites movies ever), and I have been directed by Google on "Castle Monster"... Great site !... I have found a pleasant review about "I, Monster", a very underrated movie, that you have perfectly analysed -- I hope I do not make a mistake : you are the man under the Castle Monster site, aren't you ?... If it's not the case, forgive me... Anyway, "Spooky Laboratory" looks great, and I will return to it !... Best regards from France...

  2. Wow, thanks bbjane! It's great to get feedback and pretty exciting to hear praise from someone from the great country of France! It must be a neat place for a horror fan to live! Au revoir!

  3. Hi Steve,

Ray here (Villafanestudios) I was surprised you do not enjoy the temporary aspect of carving on real pumpkins. Your pieces are great! To me the temporary aspect makes pumpkin carving very unique. kind of like that holiday dessert that relative makes only once a year. If you had it available year round it undoubtably would lose it's appeal. Sort of like the memories of a first love or anything else you enjoyed but can never have again. It always keeps it a magical memory. I've done sculptures for major companies that produce statues that sit on my shelf everyday but it is my sand and pumpkin carvings that seem so magical to me. maybe it's just me but there is something special about temporary art. Keep carving great pumpkins and take good pics...they will last forever! :)
